Are There Steroids In Professional Golf?
With all the talk about steroids in sports today its no wonder the discussion is shifting to golf. Where it used to be that working hard in the off season and seeing the progress on the course was good has now been tainted. An ounce of greatness is now clouded by suspicions of steroids and is continuously hurting sports such as golf. So the question remains, “Are there steroids in golf?”
First thought has to be, “Are you kidding me?” Simply because only 10% of all golfers in the world score under 100 and is there really a steroid out there that is going to help keep you from 3 putting? If there is I want one and so do a million other golfers out there!
The answer obviously is no, especially when you need finesse and not brawn to put the ball in the hole. However, there are other things for professional golfers that make us wonder. If a professional golfer already has the skills to make the pro tour how exactly would steroids benefit his game?
The quick thought is strength behind the swing and if the farther the ball travels could mean the difference between a 4-iron or a 7-iron. Which also would domino effect into meaning possibly a birdie over a par, or eagle over a birdie, etc.
There is also the thoughts of amateurs or pro golfers that aren’t developing the way they were hyped up in the beginning. Which is what happened with many baseball players who were not household names in the MLB world. They admitted to the Mitchell Report that having to keep up with the rest of the league was tough and in a here today gone tomorrow world players were doing whatever it took to get paid at least a few more years by taking steroids. So who is to think that won’t happen or hasn’t already in golf?
So where can golf go from here and not become engulfed with allegations hurting their historic game? It would be smart to put in place a banning of substances similar to baseball. Now that doesn’t mean they can’t go down to the local GNC and get an over-the-counter supplement that an everyday person can get. Just the ones that are dangerous and illegal.
Placing some sort of test would also definitely eliminate the doubt that the golfing world is simply naive to the thought that no one in their sport needs or would want to use steroids. It will also make their overall reputation look good as they are joining in the fight to combat an ongoing problem that has occurred in other sports. This is something that should be kept in mind by those that have the power to make decisions as the war against steroids continues.
