How To Determine If What You Are Feeling Is Anxiety
Have you ever had to do something and just the thought of doing it made you break out in a sweat and your heart begin to race? Maybe you were contemplating driving across a bridge or maybe it was a job interview, maybe it was meeting someone for the first time.
Have you ever felt the need to make sure that you locked the front door to your house after you were already down the block or worse yet maybe across town? Have you ever felt really nervous about something that other people around you thought were no big deal?
To make the situation worse, along with these feelings you probably felt very self conscious and thought “what’s wrong with me”? Did you wonder why others could cross that bridge, or speak in public or ask someone for a date?
For anyone who has ever experienced these feeling you need to understand that what you are experiencing is ANXIETY and it is estimated that there are as many as 18 million people who go through the same type of experiences when faced with similar situations.
As a matter of fact, medical professionals agree that anxiety is one of the most common medical problems today. Anxiety does not just consist of a sudden rush of emotions, like many would believe. Anxiety affects an individual on the whole. It affects how a person feels, how a person thinks, and even how a person behaves on a day-to-day basis.
Anxiety left untreated can begin to take over your whole life. Anxiety is listed as a mental disorder, but it can create very real, physical symptoms.
Types of Anxiety
As you may have noticed in my examples, there are many types of anxiety. Listed below are some of the most common types:
1.Generalized Anxiety Disorder, or GAD, is an anxiety condition in which an individual worries excessively. When the person with this type of anxiety disorder worries, it is not a “come and go” type of worry - it is persistent. So persistent, in fact, that it hinders their ability to focus on anything else due to the level of anxiety that is experienced. This would be the person that seems to “worry” about everything. No matter what it is they find a way to worry about it. This type of person also never seems happy and usually suffers from some degree of depression. 2.Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, or OCD, is another type of anxiety that is relatively common. The person who experiences this also suffers from thoughts that are obsessive in nature, and they handle these thoughts by engaging in behaviors that are deemed “ritualistic”. One person that I know had to make sure that the radio was off many times before they actually believed it was. They actually turned it on and then off several times just to make sure that it was off. 3.Phobias are another type of anxiety that millions of individuals around the world suffer from. Examples include agoraphobia, or the fear of crowds, and even arachnophobia, the fear of spiders. Others have a fear of escalators and others fear loud noises. The list is endless.
Anxiety Symptoms
There are a number of symptoms associated with anxiety. The symptoms may vary depending on the severity of the condition, as well as the specific type of anxiety that is experienced. The following details some examples of symptoms that may be commonly experienced by the individual who suffers from some form of anxiety:
* Excessively worrying about various situations, events, and other things* Severe mood swings which include depression and irritability * Physical tension * Complications in concentration, mental focus, and alertness * Varying degrees of fatigue * Unrealistic views and expectations * Extreme fear when it comes to certain things, situations, etc…. * Complications with sleep * Physical symptoms such as headaches, nausea, fatigue, and an increased need to visit the restroom * Appearing to be “edgy” or “jumpy”
Anxiety Treatments
There are many different treatments available for those who suffer from anxiety. Many people benefit from prescription medications. Seek out a qualified health care professional to find out which one is right for you.
Another effective method to relieve anxiety is for a person to “talk out” their feelings, and then receive assistance in facing the fear that results in their symptoms.
Biofeedback and hypnotherapy have also been used successfully. For those who are looking for a more “private” method of coping, there are many online resources such as support groups and forums that can be extremely beneficial.

Anxiety is a very broad subject that encompasses many different conditions, symptoms, and more. If you feel that you suffer from anxiety, or have been recently diagnosed with any type of anxiety, it is important to work closely with a medical professional so that you may experience relief from the symptoms.
